ROLE OF CARBON DI-OXIDE IN SPICE PROCESSING INDUSTRY
 
Carbon di-oxide with its varied inherent properties suits the spices industry.

In spices industry Co2 finds its way in the grinding technology.The Cryogenic Fine Grinding Technology is based on use and injection of liquid Co2 in the grinding chamber for grinding process. Advantages of Co2 in grinding technology are:

1. By utilizing the cooling power of liquid Co2 , the toughest of materials can be ground to particle sizes below 200 micron.
2. liquid Co2 to regulate the heat of the grinding mill and allow higher material throughputs at any time of year.
3. liquid Co2 has the advantage that it cools directly during the grinding process. i.e. The Co2 snow arising by the nozzle injection into the grinding chamber mixes with the product during the grinding process, thus preventing it from heating during grinding. This means that the cooling agent only eliminates the heat of the grinding process, the product leaves with almost the same temperature as it has entered.
4. liquid Co2 rises the cold spontaneously during nozzle injection, so that the product is embrittled superficially and, thus, has a better grinding behavior.
5. In case of liquid Co2, the grinding can be started at once.
6. With regard to consumption, liquid Co2 needs almost the same quantity as L-N2.
7. It is possible to spray liquid Co2 directly through a nozzle so that the coldness is provided directly behind the nozzle.
8. Machines using liquid Co2 need to be made with ordinary carbon steel / stainless steel, it will be much cheaper compared to L-N2 where the machines must be of aluminum.
9. Batch Cooler needed for the usage of liquid N2 is very expensive \96 which will push the cost of the machine; liquid Co2 does not require this cooler.
10. When compared with conventional grinding plants liquid Co2 has the following advantages:

¨ Higher flavour content
¨ Inertising inside the plant (protection against fire or dust explosions)
¨ No entrance of air humidity
¨ No entrance of germs and bacteria during the grinding process.
¨ Less cleaning time without big filter
¨ Less consumption costs through gas circulation
¨ Less plant costs through the compact plant

11. Advantages liquid Co2 grinding compared with deep temperature Grinding plants (L-N2)

¨ No pre-cooling of the plant
¨ No pre-cooling of the product,
¨ No thawing of the product
¨ No special material of the plant necessary
¨ No isolation necessary

Advantages of using solid Co2 ( dry Ice) in spices grinding

1. If the grinders can not afford the extra investment on these machineries like, nozzle needed for spraying liquid Co2 , then dry ice is the only option.

2. REDUCES THE HEAT - REQUIRING JUST 30 MINUTES OF COOLING (AS AGAINST 120 MINUTES)

3. RETAINS AROMA AS FINISHED PRODUCT COULD BE PACKED AFTER 30 MINUTES OF DRYING / COOLING

4. NORMAL COLOUR IS RETAINED

5. DRYING FLOOR REMAINS COOLER AND HENCE READY FOR NEXT BATCH.

6. HIGHLY ECONOMICAL ie Rs. 1.20 OF DRY ICE IS REQUIRED FOR ONE KG OF GROUND SPICE POWDER.

7. DOES NOT REQUIRE EXPENSIVE MACHINERY AND CAN BE DONE WITH THE STANDARD CONVENTIONAL GRINDING MACHINES.
